Martial arts weapons sparring
To start martial arts weapons training you should first start general training. In-fact you should never stop and just focus on one subject but should keep your options open, and your training fluid; variety is a good thing.
When starting to use weapons, you should get some foam and wooden versions first. For swords this may be bokken or shinai for example, but also, bo's, nunchaku, and virtually every other weapon has some kind of form specifically for training.
This is especially essential for sparring, you do not want to spar with metal objects.
